Keep working… you haven’t paid off your taxes yet

I love the Tax Foundation because they tend to uncomplicate tax issues so that everyone can understand them. Their annual Tax Freedom Day report was released today. It tells you, quite simply, that if you started giving your entire paycheck to the government on January 1st and weren’t allowed to keep any for yourself until you had paid off your taxes for that year, what date you’d be allowed to start cashing them for yourself.

The national average – April 26th.

New York State – May 9th. Second only to Connecticut, which is May 12th.

The earliest? Alabama with April 11th.

So enjoy your Easter weekend, New York. Just don’t spend too much on jellybeans and chocolate rabbits. The government owns your paycheck for another four weeks.

  1. Have you looked into the Fair Tax plan?

It seems to be pretty promising and supporters have been really researching it (pros and cons) for nearly two decades. There are, of course, some concerns with it. But most of those concerns are addressed in the book about the Fair Tax plan.

My tax freedom day is April 17 here in SC. I’ll be living it up while you’re still paying the taxman!! 🙂
